The up and coming 20-year-old actor/singer/rapper/producer Kendré, best known for his character as Jabari on CW’s hit sitcom “Girlfriends,” is revealing his artistic ability to create his own versions of hip hop’s most notable songs.
Because we get intrigued by any trend that has “nerdy” in the title, we decided to investigate and learned that not only is this guy truly talented, but a really nice guy (for a “nerd,” anyhow).
Cliq Magazine: I know you're creating your own hip-hop versions of songs, which is
Kendré: Hip Hop is not dead at all! Hip hop has definitely been corrupted through some of the music that has slipped through the cracks only because music has changed as far as content since hip hop first started. Music has changed to be more about having fun, living certain lifestyles, and displaying certain attitudes. To me that’s not really even hip-hop. It’s fun, feel-good music. Even some of the music I do fits under that category. But in my opinion, hip-hop is still alive through certain artist such as Drake, Kanye West, this dope new guy I just heard about Mac Miller, and even myself.
K: When I first decided to try the artist thing, I kind of just experimented through remixing other popular songs just to test my skills and see if I even had what it took to be an artist. The responses I got were always good, so it encouraged me to continue doing it. So then I set a goal for myself to not just remix songs by simply putting my voice on it and call it a remix, but actually finding every way possible to make the song better than the original! So whenever I put out a remix and I heard ‘KENDRE, THAT WAS BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL,’ I smile and say "Mission accomplished!" Every good remix I get under my belt only creates anticipation for my own original music, because my fans already know what to expect.
K: I would say I’m a mix of Will Smith, Drake, Lil Wayne, and Chris Brown.
K: Well, I've been hearing this one a lot, but I guess "nerdy boy swag" is a phrase that someone put on me only because it fits my look since I dress like a nerd, of course. But I personally don't call it that. I like to call it "Nerdy Elegance!” And to me "Nerdy Elegance" is just a lifestyle and a movement. It’s more than just the bowtie and suspenders I wear. It’s a personality, it’s an intelligence, it’s a mentality, it’s a respect…as well as the way I express myself through the way I dress.
K: I don't, but I would love to have one! (Laughs.)
K: Everybody just keep a lookout for all the hot new videos I have coming out off of my mixtape "Who's the Nerd." I have two surprise projects I’m working on that will be dropping later this year and a brand new album that will be dropping early next year! Stay tuned!
