White Arrows are psychadelic-pop-electro-lo-fi musicians native to Los Angeles. Confused by the lengthy musical identification? Listen to White Arrows’ single, “Get Gone,” and attempt to pigeonhole the band for yourself. White Arrows are currently touring with the release of their EP, featuring five original tracks and two remixes; look for their debut album in the following year. Self-proclaimed “the blackest ‘white’ band,” White Arrows band members Mickey Church and Andrew Naeve open up about their music and life on the road.
Cliq Magazine: There's a lot of electro pop out there right now. How to you differentiate yourselves from what's out there?
Mickey Church: I think we are maybe a bit more left-of-center than the other bands in that category. People always seem to have a hard time pinpointing exactly what we are. We've been referenced as sounding like ‘Paul Simon in space,’ ‘Phil Collins' Tarzan soundtrack on acid,’or the usual MGMT/Strokes comparisons. We bring a pyschotropical element to the music we make.
CM:You've done a lot of remixes for artists...Who is at the top of your list as far as who you would like to work with next?
Andrew Naeve: I would actually love to work on some remixes for hip hop artists, but then again, I make remixes that sound like hip hop, so I guess I'd rather have a hip hop artist work on ours truthfully.
CM:What's the story behind your name? Were there any funny runners up that you thought to call yourselves?
MC: The name was a result of a shamanic journey while I (Mickey) was studying Shamanistic Ritual, amongst other things, at NYU. I always liked the name "FRIENDS" for a band.
CM:Tell us about your experience touring with The Naked and Famous.
MC: It was amazing. It was our first full US tour and being all sold out rooms of that capacity was such a pleasure and an experience. Playing shows and meeting people in places that I've never seen before is magic. It went so well that TNAF added us to more dates aligning with our tour in December.
CM: What's the best way to get revved up for a show? Best way to come down?
MC: NEVER COME DOWN. To get revved up we chant, pow wow, scream as loud as possible, the usual stuff you do on a mountain top when no one else is around.
CM: Where can we hear you/see you next and in the new year?
MC: Our first headlining tour is happening in December. We'll be hitting the west coast (San Francisco, Portland, San Diego, Los Angeles, Seattle, Boise, Reno, Santa Barbara). Right now I'm literally in our home studio with Andy recording and writing our first full length record and will be doing so everyday until we leave for the tour in December. We'll be around town in the New Year even if your town is in another continent.
