Zip Cars—The Newest in College Student Travel
Recently, when I approached the student parking lot where I park my vehicle, I noticed something new. It wasn’t a brightly painted VW with an obnoxious amount of bumper stickers that caused me pause, but the implementation of something called “Zip Cars.”
These convenient delights have popped up at campuses all over the country apparently. Boasting new rides like Prius’ and Mini Coopers, they have their own parking spaces in students lots and even on some city streets.
Car rental has taken a futuristic turn…Zip Cars make Avis look outdated. Zip’s plan is simple. Sign up to become a member (21+ only), reserve a car online or by phone, and then simply take your Zip Card to a car and drive away! Return it to the on-campus space when you’re finished and voila!
Zipping from A to Z is convenient for a variety of reasons. For one, reservations include insurance, a handy gas card, and up to 180 miles of driving. Two, students don’t always need to rent a car for an entire day; with an hourly rate, Zip allows for shorter trips. Three, there is no hassle with a rental car company. Simply slip in and go to!
